The Early Years
Motul’s journey began in 1853 with Swan & Finch in New York, where the company produced foundational lubricants for industrial and mechanical applications. Over time, these early formulations became a proving ground tested in rail, steam, and primitive engines to establish the ethos of quality, purity, and durability that Motul is still built on.
Through the mid-20th century, Motul expanded globally, refining mineral and blend oils while building relationships with distributors and engineers in Europe. In 1932, Ernst Zaugg helped bring the brand into France via Supra Penn, and in 1957, Motul S.A. was formed when the Zaugg group acquired full rights.
The Multigrade Revolution: Motul Century
By 1953, Motul marked its centenary with a leap forward: the global launch of Motul Century, the first true multigrade motor oil in Europe. This development made it possible for one oil to work across a wider temperature range, reducing friction, improving cold starts, and simplifying formulations.
Century became a symbol not just of aging with purpose, but of technological foresight. From that moment, Motul was no longer just a lubricant company: it was a pioneer shaping how people expected oils to perform.
Semi-Synthetic Breakthrough: Century 2100 & Technosynthese
In 1966, Motul introduced Century 2100, widely credited as the first semi-synthetic motor oil. It combined mineral and synthetic bases to push performance beyond conventional oils. This “bridge” formula allowed greater resistance to oxidation, better thermal stability, and higher performance under load.
The Technosynthese approach became a hallmark: offering synthetic advantages at broader cost/benefit thresholds. Over ensuing decades, semi-synthetic oils became core to Motul’s range, serving drivers who needed more than just baseline protection.
The 100% Synthetic Era: Motul 300V & Ester Technology
Then came the bold move. In 1971, Motul launched 300V, its first fully synthetic oil. Using advanced ester chemistries (drawing lessons from aviation and extreme performance applications), 300V delivered unmatched shear strength, film stability, and performance in racing and high revving engines.
From there, the 300V family evolved in sub-variants (Power Racing, Trophy, Sport, etc.) designed for specialized conditions: endurance, sprint, elevation, heat, cold. Each generation refines balance: viscosity, additives, friction control, and protection at extreme limits.
Diversification & Modernization - Beyond Engine Oils
As vehicles and mobility evolved, so did Motul. Beyond engine oils, the heritage line expanded into:
- Transmission fluids and gear oils engineered for precision shift and torque demands.
- Brake fluids, coolants, and hydraulic fluids tuned for stability under thermal and pressure stress.
- Industrial & specialty lubricants via MotulTech, supporting machinery, industrial systems, and thermal control applications.
Into the 21st century, Motul embraced sustainable formulations (bio-sourced fluids), thermal management for hybrids and EVs, and packaging innovations that reflect a responsibility to the planet without compromising performance.
